Sheng-Ming Cheng, 79, of Hilo, formerly of Taiwan, died Oct. 2 in Honolulu. Born in Taiwan, he and was a retired professor of civil engineering at Won-Nung Technology University in Taiwan. Visitation 3-4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 13) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Memorial service at 4 p.m. Casual attire. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings). Survived by wife, Pai-Ho “Beata” Cheng of Hilo; son, Dr. Shiuh-Feng “Sherwin” (Marlene Lee) Cheng of Honolulu; daughter, Woan-Ling “Lucy” (Matthew Nash) Cheng of Cambridge, England; brothers, Sheng-Cheng Cheng and Sheng-Po Cheng of Taiwan; sisters, Mei-Shin Chen, Mei-Hui Huang and Mei-Rong Lee of Taiwan; brother-in-law, Dr. Thomas (Jean) Chen of Hilo; two grandchildren; nephews and nieces. Charles Richard Trommer, 94, of Ninole, died Oct. 2 at home. Born in New York City, he was a professor of chemistry and horticulture at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, U.S. Air Force World War II veteran, and member of Hawaii Concert Society, Viria Society, Orchid Society, Big Island Association of Nurserymen, Water Garden Society, Bamboo Society, Horticulture Society, Palm Society, and Navy League. Visitation 9-10:30 a.m. Friday (Oct. 13) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial to follow at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No.2. No monetary gifts.
